Afternoon at Lake Samish
This weekend we took advantage of some gorgeous fall weather and headed out to Lake Samish for a beautiful walk.
Of course, we couldn't get that close to a body of water without having the aqua-loving Ratchford kids beg to get in. We agreed to rolled-up-pants-wading (it IS late September).
But then our little dare devil decided he just had to take a swim. We didn't think he'd actually go through with it and gave in to his pleadings. We should have known better. He stripped down to his knickers and dove right in.
Nutcase.
He would have stayed in for hours, but as soon as the sun went behind the mountain, the temperature dropped 10 degrees and we made him get out. (Mean parents that we are.)

Forest Swing
On Sunday we rode our bikes to the forest for another afternoon of swinging. Here's some footage. (If you're wondering, Grace didn't quite get the ride the boys did because we were worried about the strength of the swing. But don't feel sorry for her yet: since then, we've purchased all the supplies needed for a stronger, more improved swinging experience - for Grace... and Mom and Dad... and we will be returning to the woods soon to test it out. Grace will get the first turn!)
Also, thank you to everyone who commented or emailed me about our last post - you helped us decide that going private is probably the right thing to do for our family and we'll be making it official soon. We'll keep you posted...

Normalcy
Things finally seem to be returning to normal after a crazy year of uncertainty. We are getting more and more settled into the new house - closets that I just threw things in while unpacking are starting to get organized and the rooms are slowly getting painted and decorated. It really feels like home now and we are very happy.
The kids are doing great in their new schools. (Grace is in the elementary and Liam is in the primary school right next door). They both got great teachers and have made friends quickly. This is a big relief to us, not that we ever doubted the sheer awesomeness of our kids, but we are glad to see them settled in so quickly. They both really love school, and I'm crossing my fingers that the love stays with them until college graduation!
Liam's class has been learning about community and they have already gone on two field trips, with two more in the next few weeks. The little boys and I got to go on both, but I forgot my camera when we went behind the scenes at the grocery store. I did get a few pictures of the police station. Liam especially loved this one. The officer showed them all around the station, the highlights being showing the kids his taser gun (Liam said, "I could SEE the electricity, Mom!") and letting the kids all try out night vision glasses in a dark room.
Here they are checking out the patrol car.
Liam has a really cute friend in class that immediately took a liking to Sam. Both field trips were walking trips and Sam held this little guy's hand the whole time. (I guess the term "little guy" was used incorrectly there - at age three, Sam is already taller than half of the kids in Liam's first grade class. I think it won't be too long before he passes Liam in height.)
Here are Sam and Declan waiting for the bus. One of these days I'll remember to bring the video camera out to capture the reunion of my four kids. Sam and Declan get absolutely giddy when the bus pulls up, and they run out to meet Grace and Liam with big hugs. Sadly, this show of pure, adoring love usually only lasts until five minutes after we walk into the house, but I'll take what I can get!
This picture was taken from our front porch. I love that the bus drops them off right in front of our house. I'll probably love it more in January.
Making zucchini bread for after school snack. This picture will probably not get me nominated for "Mother of the Year," what with my seventeen month old perched precariously on the counter while I step back to snap a photo.
Other signs that we are returning to normal: the beginning of piano...
... and swimming lessons.
In other note-worthy news, Declan is on a quest to become completely self-sufficient. Here he is after feeding himself a yogurt and applauding himself afterwards.

Our Weekend
This picture is out of order, so more later on in the post, but this weekend we went and roasted some wieners and smores at a fire pit at the beach. The sunset was gorgeous. Declan could not bear its magnificence and was forced to turn away.
We also hit the Greekfest this weekend at the local Greek Orthodox church. Cool dancing, old ladies with way too much makeup and jewlery, and of course the main reason me and Erin hit any of the local International festivals... the food. Declan is seen above enjoying some sort of mad greek donut called a Lokumouo-lumpo-potomous, or something like that. I've learned to always end Greek food words that I can't pronounce with either "lopomous" or "palakolus" and the leathery old bird usually hands you what you need.
So yeah, that's seriously the best gyro I've ever had, they even had veggie gyros for Erin (welcome to Washington, where you can be Greek & Green). Of course, the veggie gyro was not allowed inside the church (doctrinal contradictions with Saint Polomlokalus, the patron saint of seasoning lamb.)
And wouldn't you know it, the next day was the Fiestas Patrias, a hispanic cultural festival which was a collection of really cool dancing (Mexican hat dance), rippled gypsy dresses, gigantic hats that block out the sun for a small family, howling, horns, really good authentic food from a van (Erin was embarrassed that she was the only one that ordered in English, but did remember to say "Gracias"). This weekend, I have to hand it to to the Greeks, they were much more organized than the Mexicans as far as festivals go. But there was one mas grande cool part of the hispanic festival that you are not likely to see at any other cultural get together - BELOW - El Compaticion de LOW RIDER!!!
This jacked up cholo was Sam's favorite - complete with bouncing hyraulics. LOCO ESSAY.
I'm not sure if this is Liam's gang pose or a rash on his left shoulder, but you have to admit, that low rider is sa-weet. Nice pick, Liamvez.
We finished up by walking over to the Ferndale fountains one more time before the rainy season starts. You can tell by the kids' attire that this was an unplanned stop.
Yes, Sam is potty trained and without a doubt the funniest looking underwear model in town. He has the skinniest bum on the planet, and yes, those are Darth Vader knickers he's wearing.
Liam's favorite part of playing in the fountains is still blocking the jet with his bum, I have explained the exit-only detrimental physics of this pastime to Liam, but it is one of those parental advice things that can only be learned the hard way.
More from our BBQ on the beach. Grace is a shell hound.
Father and son. Roasting the wieners. Not sure what I was teaching right here, but I'm very sure Sam will remember every little bit of brilliant advice I was giving him... on hot dogs.
More beach and sunset shots.
And last, but not least, here are the kids in their new reunion hats sent by Grandma Beckstead. Thanks so much, Grandma! They loved getting a package in the mail and they love their new hats - you are so thoughtful! We love and miss you!

More Fun With the Other Ratchfords
On Saturday we took a walk down to the beach at low tide for some exploration...
Davy and Garreth found this huge crab and after about twenty minutes of psyching themselves up, finally picked it up for some pictures!
I love Garreth's face in this one. "Just hurry up and take the picture!"
We also took the gang to Whatcom Falls Park in Bellingham.
Before Tom and Merrily left on Sunday, there were still a few more Ratchford Male Traditions that needed to be done, such as the
"Strength and Endurance Test"....
... and eating a yummy curry.
On Labor Day we stayed close to home in Birch Bay and went down to the state park, where Garreth and Davy hung a swing in the branches of a really high tree for the kids to play on. They had so much fun and all of them had a really hard time waiting their turn!
Ronan and Declan especially loved it. Declan threw a huge crying fit when we took him out. I think he could have stayed in it all day.
Then we took the canoe out in the bay. The sun was starting to go down and it was gorgeous.
White boys:
It was a fun, crazy week and I'm glad we had so much going on because it distracted me a little from missing this:

The annual Beckstead Reunion at Cherry Hills.
Sisters and cousins: I'm hoping to see lots of pictures on your blogs!!
