Summer Fun

This summer is passing so quickly!  Here are some random pictures of our last few weeks.

These two have enjoyed trying to put together matching outfits each day.

Painting rocks.
(This picture makes the craft project look way more successful than it actually was.  I should have also taken a picture about 10 minutes after this one.  It would have shown three boys covered in war paint and handprints, running around the yard and trying to throw and kick the finished painted rocks that were drying in the sun.  Oh well, they all seemed to have fun, Grace painted for ages, and it kept them...and me...busy for a while!)

I promised Grace one summer party with her four good friends from Ferndale.  She planned and prepared for it all by herself, and was a little let down when it was over.  They all had a great time.

We went raspberry picking...

...and made loads of yummy jam.

We also went out for Liam's birthday dinner at, you guessed it...
...Billy McHale's.

One of our favorite ways to keep the kids behaving nicely in restaurants is by bringing the camera and letting them take pictures of each other making funny faces.
Here are the results of the "angry face..."

Then of course, the staff came out and brought Liam his sundae and sang Happy Birthday.  (We know the words to the special "Billy's Happy Birthday Song" as well as the waitresses.)

And Liam was one happy camper.

We are leaving tomorrow for a trip back to Utah and Idaho and we can't wait to see all our families!

Bend

We just got back last night from a fun weekend in Bend, Oregon.  Some good friends, the Livingstons, invited us to go with them to their parents' condo near Bend and we had such a great time.  I didn't take as many pictures as I meant to, but we loved swimming every day, playing games, and relaxing... well, as much relaxing as we could do with a house full of seven kids!
Sam and Josephine.
"The Graces."
Grace R. (we usually call her by her Irish name, Grainne, when we're with the other Grace!) was very stoked when the Livingstons invited her to stay an extra day with them after we left yesterday.  She gets back tonight, and man, we miss her!
We loved watching a pair of deer from the deck of the condo.  They didn't even run when Sam yelled at them to "bow to their sensei."
Central Oregon is a unique and beautiful place, and we loved the parts we saw of Bend.  There was a great market going on downtown that was fun to walk around.
We also got to celebrate Liam's birthday.  He got some pretty cool stuff...
...roller blade gear...
...Captain The Roni (as Sam calls him)....
...and a Nintendo DS and games.

Great kid, great weekend.

Happy Birthday, Liam!

It's hard to believe that little Liam is seven today!
Where does the time go?

Liam is such an amazing boy.  He is so tender-hearted, loving, and sensitive, and has always been my mama's boy.  He is funny and a great friend to everyone, especially his little brothers, who worship the ground he walks on.  He lets them wrestle him every day and hardly ever "puts his strong on."

Liam is super-talented at everything he does, just like his dad.  He is a great dancer and musician.  When we got RockBand, he blew us away with his musical abilities.  Garreth immediately started teaching him drum lessons, and I signed him up for piano, and he is doing great at both.  He is also a good little athlete and student.

He is simply the best son anyone could ever ask for and we love him so much!

Fourth of July Weekend (Light and get away)

We had a fun holiday weekend.  On Thursday, we got to see some old friends, the Titensors, who were passing through, and we had so much fun catching up with them.  They stayed overnight and we got to take them to a few of our favorite places in Birch Bay - the Point Whitehorn trail and then lunch and treats at the C-Shop.

At the beach the tide was pretty low and we found about eight starfish on the rocks.  I didn't even know starfish could be purple - aren't they pretty?  Young naturalist Sam rescued each one and put them back in the ocean.  (Isn't there a cheesy story about that?  "I made a difference to THAT one..." or something?)

Andrew, Allie, Chris, and Kastle - It was so fun to see you guys!

On the fourth, we ended up staying home and going to the Blaine parade, which paled in comparison to the awesomeness of the Preston rodeo parades, which, let's face it, set the parade standard incredibly high.
This one had far too many classic cars, but we did agree that Coast Guard ships and yachts would be a fun, unexpected addition to the tractor section of the Preston parades.  I'll make some calls on that one, I know some people.
It was a hot, sunny day by Washington coast standards, and we cooled down with some yummy Hawaiian shaved ices...
...which left our tongues delightful colors.

The evening of the fourth, we went down to the Semiahmoo Spit for a barbeque and to watch the fireworks.  The day was warm, the water was lovely, and the kids swam until about 8:30.

Then we got dressed...
...and snuggled up with friends to watch the fireworks.

It was beautiful to see the fireworks over the ocean.

We also bought some of our own to set off, but they weren't allowed on that beach.  So instead of putting the kids to bed at 11:00 two nights in a row, we lit them off at home the next day at about five o'clock.  Not quite as fun to watch as when it's dark, but we are lame enough to value a good night's sleep over high entertainment.
The kids started off super-pumped about lighting our stash...
...until the first one went off.
These three watched the entire show from here:
But Liam sure enjoyed it!  There was one in particular that he helped me pick out at the fireworks stand called "The Unicorn."  The lady told us that it was a great one because it lasted about four minutes.  Liam was so excited all week for that one, and just before we lit it off, he exclaimed, "I can't believe it lasts FOUR MINUTES!  Sam, that's as long as your time-outs!"
Then it was sparkler time.  I was excited to try an idea I read in a magazine about sticking the sparklers into a tub of playdough so they don't get hot on the kids' hands.  (I always hated those little sparks that hit your arm when you swing your sparkler around writing your name.)

Well, the playdough might have helped a little, but it turns out my kids hate those little sparks, too.  We had to set up a burn unit.
We were lucky to have Ol' Sparkly Pants Ratchford wow and amaze us with his unparalleled grace and skills.

It was truly magical.

And here's a few random dress-up photos.  (We've been doing a lot of that, since it started raining Monday and hasn't let up yet.)
Liam in one of Gram's old wigs.  He put this on and said, "Look!  I'm Uncle Craig!"
Declan, the Yankee Doodle Spidey.
And here's a rare glimpse of what Sam would look like:
a) if he were a girl, and b) if I were a big-bow-loving-mama.
